The good news is that President Barack Obama is talking about an increase in the minimum wage. The last time the minimum wage was raised was in July 2009, when the increase went to $7.25 an hour.
Itís really past time for us to have a steady schedule for when the minimum wage should be increased. Unfortunately, when we have recessions, itís difficult to talk about increasing pay. Sending jobs overseas was really a bad idea. That anyone thought if jobs were sent away from home, people here would be able to buy products from overseas was really small thinking.
It really disturbs me that we donít have a department in our government that works on paying attention to jobs full time. We need to know what section of our economy is producing and where we are failing. If we are not doing what we need to be doing in the field of infrastructure, some government department should be on top of that. We shouldnít have bridges and highways that havenít been worked on in years. The federal government should set aside money every year for each state to replace or repair its infrastructure.
Jobs are the main business of the economy and we need to work on that area of our economy all the time. What other jobs does our Department of Labor have to do? It should know how many people are employed in every field of endeavor, as well as how many people are employed in manufacturing and what they are manufacturing. How many cars are being made in the United States each year and how many people are employed in making them? We should know what jobs are not being done and how many people are not working in that field.
We should not allow our vital necessities to be shipped out of this country to be made somewhere else. Someone should be keeping account of things like this. Do we have enough people making mouthwash in our country? I donít think people particularly want somebody in a foreign country making something as intimately needed as mouthwash for them.
I think that people whose job it is to examine our trading practices should be people who are more in tune with what American values are. People who are more concerned with money than they are with values simply need to be replaced.
Having people keeping an eye on the way jobs are moving through the society is an idea whose time has come. A new minimum wage should be scheduled for every two years. If the economy is managed, there should be no reason why that wouldnít be possible.
It is simply amazing that jobs and work are not handled as efficiently as everything else in our society when they are so important.
Itís time to get a grip on one of the most important things in our lives. †
Obviously when we canít afford to buy gas, weíll have to stop driving. Well, maybe we will begin to realize that weíve moved all of our services, the things we need, out of our neighborhoods. Thatís the thing I love about New York City ó you donít have to go miles away from home to find something to eat.
Actually, Iíd like to see the end of malls. I liked it when all the stores were downtown. Maybe, the time will come when we can enjoy walking again. I mean walking to the store and carrying our food home. Remember when?
I hate to think the day will come when I have to borrow a cup of gas!
