The Sedalia Area Literacy Council will host its 13th annual tea and auction at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 3700 W. Broadway Blvd.
Last year, members were ecstatic about the items they had up for bid and didn’t think they could be topped.
“We’ve gotten even better donations this year,” said Betty Albrecht, president of the literacy council. “People have been very generous and kind to us.”
State Fair Community College put together a package worth about $700. It includes a free three-credit hour class at any SFCC location, a free on-ground Lifelong Learning noncredit class, a personalized Legacy Walkway brick, a family membership to the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, two passes to 2013-14 music arts performances and theater arts performances, two all-sports passes to 2013-14 Roadrunner basketball games and $50 certificate to the Premium Campus Store.
Meanwhile, the Thompson Hills Shopping Center basket is valued at more than $475 and features gift certificates from most of the merchants in the center. However, Albrecht said items range in price from $10 to hundreds of dollars so everyone can afford something.
Each of the elementary schools in Sedalia created their own gift baskets. They have different themes like science, art, coffee, bringing baby home and a basket focusing on the book “A Nest for Celeste.”
Other hot items include an autographed book of John Grisham’s “The Racketeer,” a hand-made wooden Noah’s Art made by Leon Moore and Ralph Spurrier and a State Fair Shopping Center basket valued at more than $150.
This year’s goal is to raise $5,000. The money will be used to support the Newspapers in Education program, help elementary students attend the Literacy Fair in Warrensburg and purchase books for students who give reviews on the radio.
Albrecht said the money will also go toward the cost of publishing their own nursery rhyme book. These books will be given to each baby born at Bothwell Regional Health Center. The council chose 17 illustrations created by fourth-graders in Sedalia who entered their annual bookmark contest.
This is the council’s only fundraiser of the year. Admission is $5 and includes refreshments, drinks and a bid paddle. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
“We are focusing on our mission — building a reader and a library one book at a time,” said Albrecht. “We’re really hopeful to raise $5,000 this year.”
