(StatePoint) New research continues to conclude what many cultures knew hundreds and hundreds of years ago -- berries are good for our health. With researchers indicating that berries can aid in fighting heart disease and help preserve brain and eye health, many nutrition experts are advising diners to fill their plates with a rainbow of berries.
The health benefits of blueberries, in particular, have been receiving much attention. They’re low in fat, have just 80 calories per cup, and contain a category of phytonutrients called polyphenols. Research indicates that polyphenols have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can play an important role in lessening the inflammatory process associated with chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and age-related cognitive decline.
And as the weather warms, there’s no better time to start rolling some berries of all colors into your family’s salads and cool desserts.
