The Smith-Cotton golf team shot a 176 to beat O’Hara by two strokes on Wednesday at Minor Park Golf Course in Kansas City.
Clinton shot a 196 to take third in the three-team event.
the Tigers’ Alex Lorenz was the medalist, shooting a 38. Jacob Carroll shot a 41 to tie for second with O’Hara’s Sam Bryant. Smith-Cotton’s Taylor Mankin shot a 47 and Tyler Spear and Tyler Steger each shot a 50.
The only team with a lower score than the Smith-Cotton varsity was the Smith-Cotton junior varsity. All five Tigers JV players shot a round in the 40s, led by Nick Morrison and Wyatt Foster who shot matching 43s. Jackson Kempton shot a 44, Kendall Weymuth shot a 45 and Zach Morrison shot a 47.
TRACK AND FIELD
S-C boys first at CMU
Smith-Cotton’s boys track team took first at a meet at Central Methodist University Tuesday, scoring 196 points.
The Tigers took first in eight events. Luke Guier won the 200 and 400. He was also part of the first-place 4x100 relay team along with Alex Contreras, Keoni Hale and Austin LaBoube. Guier, Contreras, Albert Nash and Taylor Gilliam then won the 4x400 relay.
Marquez Raye took first in the 110 hurldes with Michael Chernookiy second in that race and in the 300 hurdles.
Chance Johnson won the high jump. Zac Volk was first in pole vault with Bailey Hendricks second.
Hale won the triple jump and took third in the 400.
Nash was second in the long jump. Carlton Homan was third in the discus.
Smith-Cotton took second in the 4x800 relay and third in the 4x200.
The Lady Tigers finished seventh with 58 points.
Mariana Ward was second in the 100, fourth in the 110 hurldes, second in long jump and second in the 300 hurldes.
Brianna Cain took fifth in the 800. Sarah Hughes was sixth in the 300 hurdles. Abbey Perkins was third in shot put and eighth in discus.
Warsaw boys 10th at Stockton
The Warsaw boys track and field team scored 15 points to claim 10th place at Stockton on Tuesday.
Austin Larsen was fourth in the 1600 with a time of 5:05 and fourth in the 3200 with a time of 11:03.
Tim Jackson ran the 800 in 2:20 to take sixth. Jonathon Plybon took seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 34-8.
The 4x800 relay team took fifth with a time of 9:34.4 and the 4x100 relay team was seventh with a time of 50.5.
The Warsaw girls track team took 13th with 11 points.
The 4x800 relay team took fourth with a time of 12.14. The 4x400 relay team was sixth with a time of 5:02.
Jessica Kuykendall took sixth in the 3200 with a time of 13:52. Rickie Branson was sixth in the long jump clearing 13-1 and Emilee Proctor took seventh in discus with a throw of 78-8.25.
St. Paul Lutheran 16, La Monte 14, 9 innings
La Monte fell to St. Paul 16-14 in extra innings in a non-conference softball game Tuesday in Concordia.
The Lady Saints scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth following a La Monte error with two out to take a 13-12 lead. La Monte scored in the top of the seventh to tie the game, then after the Lady Vikings put a run on the board in the top of the ninth, St. Paul answered with two runs in their half for the win.
La Monte trailed 3-0 after one before scoring five in the second, another in the third and six in the fifth inning to take the 12-5 lead.
Madison Harris took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on 17 hits. She struck out nine. At the plate, she went 2 for 6 with a double and drove in three runs.
Cathy Butts went 1 for 5 with a double and drove in two runs. Katie Patrick drove in four runs, going 5 for 5 at the plate. Tori Karigan, Daniele Rose and Alexa Shull each went 2 for 4. Karigan and Shull each stole two bases and Shull drove in two runs.
La Monte will visit Sacred Heart today.
Sacred Heart 9, Northwest 0
Jackson Smith’s 3 for 3 performance at the plate including a two-run triple in the fourth helped Sacred Heart beat Northwest 9-0 in a Kaysinger Conference baseball game on Tuesday.
Ben Smeltzer also went 2 for 4 including an RBI single and an RBI double.
Mason Kelcher got the win on the mound for the Gremlins. He pitched five innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out seven. Caleb Tanguay allowed one hit and struck out four in two innings of relief.
Trey Green took the loss for the Mustangs.
Pilot Grove 12, Higbee 2
Pilot Grove got big innings early in a 12-2 win over Higbee on Tuesday.
The Tigers scored three in the first and three more in the second, then added four in the third and two in the fourth.
Jake Leverton pitched four innings and allowed one run on three hits, striking out five for Pilot Grove. Jacob Twenter pitched the fifth inning and allowed a run and a hit with two strikeouts.
Jon Gerke went 3 for 3 at the plate including a home run. Twenter also homered in the game. Colton Glenn went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs. Trenton Young went 2 for 3.
