“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a production by the University of Central Missouri’s Theatre Department, follows the everyday life of Vanya and Sonia, two 50-something siblings living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Named by their late parents after characters in Anton Chekhov plays, Vanya and Sonia’s days are ordinary, and they spend much of their time contemplating what ‘could have been.’ Their lives are disrupted upon the return of their glamorous sister, Masha, who owns the house and intends to sell it.
Her latest fling, the desirable 20-something Spike, complicates matters when he becomes attracted to Nina, an aspiring young actress visiting her aunt and uncle next door, which sparks Masha’s jealousy and provokes further rivalries and arguments between the sisters. Observing the chaos, Cassandra, the eccentric cleaning lady, plots to save the house from its sale. “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” promises to be a hilarious evening of sibling rivalry and high jinks.
