A Sedalia teenager has accused a 25-year-old man of raping her in a local church.
According to court documents, a 15-year-old female told a friend at school she had been raped sometime after Jan. 1 after a youth group meeting at New Hope Baptist Church, 664 E. 16th St. The friend told a school counselor who spoke with the victim, who said on two occasions a subject known to her as Travis had sexual relations with her at the church.
The subject the victim referred to has been identified as Travis James Clunie, 25, of the 1900 block of South Lamine Avenue.
The victim was interviewed at Child Safe of West Central Missouri Inc. April 29. She told the interviewer about meeting Clunie at youth group and at a later youth group meeting he told the victim to follow him to the upstairs of the church once everyone else had left. Once they arrived in the bathroom, the victim said they began to kiss and he tried to take her clothes off, which she told him several times to stop doing.
The victim said she tried to leave but Clunie blocked the door, which he had locked. He then allegedly forced the victim to have sex with him. A similar incident happened the next week.
The church’s pastor spoke with detectives and told them Clunie had been coming to the church for a few months but was not a member and had asked to attend the youth group, but was told he was too old. When Clunie asked to help with the youth group, the pastor said he could not because the church did not know him and he needed to pass a background check.
Clunie was arrested April 29 and interviewed by the Sedalia Police Department. He at first denied the accusations, but then admitted to having sex with the victim, stating he knew she was 15 but that it was consensual.
According to online court documents, Clunie has been charged with second degree rape and second degree statutory rape. A warrant for his arrest was issued and served April 30 by the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office.
Clunie is at the Pettis County Jail on a $100,000 bond, cash or surety, and includes that he can have no contact of any kind with any female younger than 18.
In a separate case, Clunie has been charged with first degree sodomy. He was issued a $100,000 bond, cash only.
A victim came to SPD April 27 to report she had been sodomized by Clunie in January while they were at Katy Park, located at 24th Street and South Grand Avenue. The victim told detectives she decided to come forward when she found out Clunie was being investigated for another sex crime.
The victim, who first met Clunie last year, said she picked him up in her vehicle to get some food and then drove to Katy Park to eat. She told detectives that while parked at Katy Park, Clunie forced her to perform oral sex on him.
She said she sustained bruises on her neck and shoulders during the incident, but there is no documented proof of the injuries.
An arraignment for both cases took place Tuesday and a hearing has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Online court records do not list an attorney for Clunie.
Court documents indicate Clunie does not have a criminal history.
