Tornado Watch issued for Pettis County

A Tornado Watch has been issued until 10 p.m. for Pettis County.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for portions of southern Iowa, eastern Kansas and northwest Missouri. Primary threats include a few tornadoes likely with a couple intense tornadoes, possible widespread large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2.5 inches in diameter. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph are also possible.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill has issued notice that some of the alerts they have issued today have not properly opened NOAA Weather Radios. NWS is working to correct the issue, but is asking residents to ensure they have more than one way to monitor weather alerts.

Other options include radio and television broadcasts, and the Pettis County Sheriff’s NIXLE service. Sign up for NIXLE by texting the word PETTIS to 888777.
