Rhonda Overbey was named publisher of the Sedalia Democrat by Civitas Media LLC., the Democrat’s parent company, beginning this week.
Overbey comes to the Sedalia Democrat from the Muskogee (Oklahoma) Phoenix where she served as the advertising manager. Overbey has been associated with the newspaper business in Oklahoma and Central Arkansas since 1992.
Overbey is a graduate of Conway, Arkansas, and has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She is pursuing a master’s degree in Administrative Leadership from the University of Oklahoma.
Overbey was managing editor of the Razorback yearbook for two years and named in 1991’s Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities. After graduation, Overbey joined the staff at the daily Log Cabin Democrat in Conway, Arkansas, where she worked in editorial, advertising sales, and as advertising director for more than 10 years. Working at the statewide Arkansas Democrat Gazette and with consumer publications at the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, Overbey broadened her experience targeting niche products and websites to new audiences.
“It’s an exciting time to be in the industry, Overbey said. “Communities are no longer limited in how they read their news. Thanks to digital platforms, more people than ever are accessing local news and information 24/7/365.”
Overbey has a long history of community service. She has served on the Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce visitor and tourism committee and is a former chairman of the Toad Suck Daze family festival in Conway, Arkansas. She has served on boards and committees supporting the Boys & Girls Club, Big Brother Big Sisters, United Way, and many other worthwhile organizations.
Overbey has three nephews, one great-nephew and one more on the way. She is a Christian and looks forward to visiting a few local churches and exploring central Missouri and local shopping opportunities. She is an animal lover and a football enthusiast.
“I’m proud to join the award-winning staff of The Sedalia Democrat and look forward to engaging with the community,” she said.
