Inmate found dead at Pettis County Jail

Pettis County Coroner Robert “Skip” Smith said an inmate, James H. Smith, was found dead in his cell at 9:15 p.m. Sunday at the Pettis County Jail.

According to a release from the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office, during routine cell checks at the jail, Smith was found alone and dead in his cell. An investigation into the cause of death, which is believed to be self-inflicted, is ongoing. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday morning at the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Smith, 36, of Sedalia, was arrested on suspicion of drug possession, drug distribution and a parole violation warrant from the State Department of Corrections.
