The Sedalia Concert Band will open its 119th season tonight at Convention Hall with special guests plus musical selections from the “Harry Potter” films and the band The Association.
The Concert Band, comprised of approximately 60 members, will perform every Thursday night for six weeks inside Convention Hall at Liberty Park. They will finish their season in September at the Cole Camp Fair.
This year Concert Band Director Britt Faaborg said they will perform “old favorites” but will also present some music that’s not been played for more than a decade.
“We’ve kind of dug into the files and pulled out some music we haven’t done in quite a few years,” he said. “I’ve been with the band since 1990, and I don’t actually remember playing them. There are some songs we haven’t done for 10 to 15 years.”
The band will also play a wide variety of music including marches, show tunes, old standards and some popular numbers. Melodies for today’s performance include a medley from the “Harry Potter” movies, the fan favorite “Stardust,” a medley from the 1960s group The Association and a couple marches.
Faaborg added that the band has several young people playing this year.
“Which I think is great,” he noted. “We have kids in there that are junior high age. I know our oldest member is Nadine Fingland, and Nadine is 92 or 93. We have people who have been in the band for many years, and then we’ve got quite a few new people this year.”
This year, as always, they band will have special guest performers. Tonight’s performance will feature the Children’s Crescendo Choir from the Liberty Center Association for the Arts.
“The Sedalia Chorale is performing next week,” Faaborg said. “I think the Sedalia Chorale will be back for the final concert too.”
Faaborg suggested that those attending the concert come early and bring lawn chairs. The Sedalia Concert Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. tonight inside Convention Hall at Liberty Park. The event is air-conditioned and free to the public.
