Looking magnificent and fresh from a bath, Fancy a Percheron draft mare, is led by Sheena Wagler back to her stall at the Missouri State Fair horse barns, Friday. Fancy is owned by Enos Yoder and the Yoder Family Hay Co., of West Cliff, Colorado. The 5-year-old mare measures 19-hands and has 10-inch hooves. Fancy will compete in several MSF shows including the eight-hitch draft horse show on Sunday in the Mathewson Exhibition Center. “They are gentle giants,” Yoder said.
Robyn Holtgrewe, of Sullivan, trims her Percheron draft horse Amos’s mane Friday inside the MSF horse barn. Holtgrewe said Amos’s registered name is “Hidden Wise Champ.” He will compete alongside her other draft horse, 7-year-old “Descansa’s Dolly,” in the cart and team classes.
Jared Frizzelle, of Chilhowee, stopped at the MSF horse barns on Friday to give a pat to Eve a 4-year-old Percheron draft horse. Eve is owned by John Billings, of Descansa Percherons of Jade Hills in Springfield. She stands 18 hands and has hoofs that are 9.5 inches across. On Friday Eve competed in the MSF six-horse draft show and in two team shows. On Sunday she will compete in the eight-hitch show. “She has the ‘it,’” Kathleen Phelps, Billings’s daughter, said. “She’s made to be a show horse.”
Draft horse harnesses hang in a stall belonging to Duane Herschberger of Hersch Belgiums, of Milan, in the MSF horse barns Friday. The Belguims of Hersch, that were the 2015 MSF six-hitch grand champions, will participate in the eight-hitch draft horse show on Sunday.
