A new downtown business is looking to help Sedalia residents get a little bit healthier.
Get Fit Sedalia Nutrition, located at 122 S. Ohio Ave., has had a soft opening for the past month, but celebrated its grand opening Monday evening with a full house of visitors wanting to learn more about healthier lifestyles. Owner Terra Nelson said that’s exactly why she wanted to open the store in the first place.
“I wanted to give the community a place to come and get healthy, have a quick and easy way to get a healthy meal and be in a healthy environment because we don’t have a lot of that around here,” she said Tuesday morning. “We are personal health coaches and we provide nutritional information, education, one-on-one support for people. We provide weight-loss challenges, we have some fitness classes that are fun.
“Here at Get Fit Sedalia Nutrition we focus on 80 percent nutrition, 20 percent fitness and 100 percent mindset. If your mind’s not in it then you’re not going to be in it, so we want everyone to have the full picture.”
The Get Fit coaches offer healthy eating habits, assistance with weight management, and support through the process of creating a healthier lifestyle. Herbalife products, including tea and meal replacement shakes, are also available for purchase. For Nelson, it’s a process she’s been through personally, which also fueled her goal to open Get Fit in Sedalia.
“I started Herbalife as a client about three years ago. Before Herbalife I was really depressed and had extreme low self-esteem and digestive problems, and you know the low self-esteem part, that’s why I love the 100 percent mindset because it really gets into your personal development,” Nelson said. “I fell in love with the tea, shakes and aloe through a nutrition club that was here in town at the time. Instantly I started to feel better, my tummy problems were going away, I was feeling like a new woman. So as people started to see my results, they were like, ‘what are you doing?’ … I got excited and that’s when I was like, let’s do the business.
“I started impacting a few people, and once you see how happy those people are, and their families are, I was like, I need to do this on a bigger vision. I need to get Sedalia healthy. Let’s bring in Cole Camp, Windsor and Warrensburg.”
The health coaches will offer free wellness evaluations to help clients create a fitness and nutrition plan. Nelson said sometimes people don’t know where to start, or once they start they lose motivation, and that’s where she and the other coaches come in.
“We do things like suggest healthy eating habits, educate you on proper nutrition, give you assistance with weight management, so it’s not just a weight loss company,” she said. “We can help people lose weight, gain weight, maintain weight if you just want to be fit. We have something for everybody here.”
A weight-loss challenge will launch July 27. Nelson’s first challenge had 17 people, and her goal for the first Get Fit challenge is to triple that number. Nelson said she already had a large number of people sign up for the challenge during Monday’s grand opening.
“We’ve done big challenges like that where the whole group lost 300 or 400 pounds,” said health coach Carmen Mireles. “That will help with the obesity problem, diabetes, with helping reduce those things, and just having people learn how to have a healthy, active lifestyle, so the impact is much bigger.”
Get Fit Sedalia Nutrition is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and by appointment. Fitness classes are hosted various evenings throughout the week. Nelson said as the business gains more coaches, she will be able to expand her hours.
