Helping people feel at home

Billie Barnes of REMAX of Sedalia has spent the past decade helping individuals feel a sense of home in Sedalia and Pettis County. “One of the best parts of my job is helping first time home buyers find their perfect house,” Barnes said. “I get to meet some very nice people in my line of work.”

For longtime Pettis County residents or for individuals who are new to the area, the name Billie Barnes may be a familiar one.

For more than a decade, Barnes has been a realtor with REMAX of Sedalia, helping families find a home to call their own. Barnes does more than simply sell a house to a client. She helps people feel a sense of community through her work with various service organizations in the community.

“I’m really not sure how I fit it all into a day,” Barnes said. “I think I run a lot.”

Barnes said in a typical week she spends 65 hours with her job.

“I think as a realtor there aren’t weekends,” Barnes said. “Some days I start at 7 a.m. and don’t stop until after 10 at night. I remember one time I was in a crawl space under a house late one night putting down plastic for a client.

“I try to make the sale of a property as stress-free as possible for my buyer,” Barnes added. “Sometimes we’re at the mercy of someone else and when that happens I take it all to heart and I really stress out about it.”

Barnes’ hard work has paid off. In 2014, she was named the top agent in the West Central Region (Clinton, Warsaw and Sedalia.) Barnes sold more than 100 sites, totaling more than $13 million last year in sales.

Barnes is equally dedicated to her work in the community.

She serves on the board of the Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce, the Sedalia School District Foundation, and is a member of various committees including the West Central Association of Realtors and the Piccadilly Gala committee.

The Red Cross and United Way are two other organizations she has worked closely with in the past.

As her five children have grown, she has found spending time with them at their school functions has become a focus for her time.

“I have a child in show choir and two who play soccer,” Barnes said. “So, I try to volunteer at their events and I go to as many of their games and performances as I can.

“When the children were little, I used to sponsor as many kid-related activities as I could,” she said. “Now, I try to make the REMAX hot air balloon available for those kinds of events and functions, really anything that has to do for charity and children I like to try to sponsor.

“I think I’m just like everyone else,” Barnes said. “I do whatever it takes to do what needs to be done. You always go forward to what is next.”
