Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia and University of Missouri Health in Columbia have announced a new partnership with two local orthopedic surgeons to help expand care options in Sedalia.

The partnership with Douglas W. Kiburz, M.D, and Ryan Kelly Edwards, M.D., began Thursday, with the name of their practice changing from West Central Missouri Orthopaedic Surgical Services, PC, to Bothwell Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. This partnership will expand the duo’s resources from BRHC and the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, part of MU Health.

BRHC Chief Operating Officer Mark Hirshberg said the level of care will remain the same; only the sign outside the building at 2301 S. Ingram Ave. will change.

“It’s the same care, the same people are going to be caring for them in the orthopedic office,” he said. “It’s the same nursing staff, the same people greeting them at the front desk. Everything is mostly behind the scenes that the patients really won’t see. The care they’ve always gotten, they’ll continue to get.”

According to a release from BRHC, with this new partnership, Kiburz and Edwards are now employed by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, part of the MU Health system. Bothwell will contribute by managing the facility and providing administrative and medical equipment services.

Kiburz and Edwards are board-certified orthopedic surgeons who specialize in joint replacement, trauma and sports medicine. Their former private practice has been affiliated with Bothwell since 1986. Now their patients will benefit from their doctors also being affiliated with MOI, central Missouri’s largest freestanding orthopaedic center, as well as the region’s most comprehensive orthopaedic surgery center, according to information from Bothwell.

The institute’s staff includes more than 30 physicians specializing in a wide variety of orthopedic care.

“Once it’s all accomplished, we started (Thursday), it will be a much higher level of care than what can be done here,” Hirshberg said. “It will be a seamless transition to what I like to call specialty care — things Dr. Edwards and Dr. Kiburz don’t perform — a seamless transition over to Missouri Orthopaedic Institute because we’re all linked together, so I think it provides for more seamless transition and more direct referral since they are now part of Missouri Orthopaedic Institute.

“They’re in a large group now. There will be some benefits of a large group practice, but getting health care in the same place you’ve been getting it for years with the benefit of a large group backing them up.”

Bothwell officials have said they would like to add a third orthopaedic surgeon to the area, and this new partnership with MU will help with recruiting someone to the newly-named practice.

“I think that was another piece of this that was attractive to us was the ability to recruit additional orthopaedic surgeons into Sedalia,” Hirshberg said. “It’s much easier to recruit to a larger group than it is to a practice of two, plus there’s the orthopedic residency and fellowship at MU, so it’s possible we could interest some of those folks graduating there to stay and practice here in Sedalia.”
