The Sedalia 200 Board of Education will meet tonight to vote on several items concerning the upcoming building additions to the high school as well as operational matters.
In May, the board voted to proceed with two additions to Smith-Cotton High School, one, a multipurpose classroom for physical education, and a second space for additional classrooms.
“We have seen increased enrollment this year and we definitely need the space,” Superintendent Brad Pollitt said. “We’re not so crowded that it’s not working, but we can definitely use the additional room.”
The current sophomore class has an additional 60 students from last year’s graduating class, that in combination with the move of the freshmen to the high school and an overall increase in the student body is a reason for the additions.
According to information presented to the board by project manager Dennis Paul of Septagon Industries, the contract bid recommendations are approximately nine percent under budget.
“We are extremely pleased with the numbers we have seen so far,” Pollitt said. “Anytime you have qualified bids that come in under budget it is beneficial to the district.”
The administration is hoping to begin groundwork on the multipurpose facility in early November.
The district will host at least one district football game at Tiger Stadium and will begin construction at the completion of S-C’s football season.
The board is also expected to vote on proposed changes to the district’s soft drink, water and athletic drink contracts.
Changes in federal and state nutritional guidelines now prohibit the sale of carbonated beverages during school hours.
“We don’t sell any soft drinks or carbonated beverages during school hours,” Pollitt said. “The new proposal, if the board votes to approve, will allow the Booster Club and other organizations leeway to make purchasing agreements with whatever vendor they choose.
In other actions, the board will discuss board policy updates and hear information regarding attendance and enrollment and donations made to the district.
The board meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Smith-Cotton High School in the Heckart Center for the Performing Arts, 2010 Tiger Pride Blvd.
