Woman injured in Saline crash

A woman sustained moderate injuries in a two-vehicle accident at 4:53 p.m. Saturday in Saline County.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Nicholas B. Atkinson, 18, of Marshall, was driving west on Interstate 70 at the 83.8 mile marker when his vehicle began to slide and overtook and struck the rear of a westbound vehicle driven by Andy J. Heitman, 52, of Washington, Missouri.

Heitman’s vehicle left the road, striking a cable barrier and came to rest in the median. Atkinson’s vehicle came to rest on the shoulder.

A passenger in Heitman’s vehicle, Kimberly A. Peters, 46, of Belleville, Illinois, was taken by Saline County Ambulance District to Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall for her injuries.

Reports indicate all three involved parties were wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Man killed in Benton crash

A Deepwater man was killed in a four-vehicle accident at 7:42 p.m. Saturday in Benton County.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Lawrence D. Tucker, 18, of Cole Camp, was driving north on U.S. Highway 65 near Byrum Avenue when he was passing two northbound vehicles driven by Randy M. Hercules, 51, of Deepwater, and Kevin M. Gladman, 25, of Stover.

Tucker’s vehicle struck Hercules and Gladman’s vehicles and then struck a southbound vehicle driven by Shian N. Swearingin, 18, of Hermitage, head-on, causing Gladman’s vehicle to leave the road and overturn.

Tucker continued traveling north and struck the towed unit of Swearingin’s vehicle, causing it to leave the right side of the road and overturn.

Hercules was pronounced dead at 9:33 p.m. by Dr. Matt Robinson of University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.

Tucker, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken by Life Flight to University Hospital with moderate injuries.

Gladman, who was also not wearing a seat belt, was taken by Cole Camp Ambulance District to Bothwell Regional Health Center with moderate injuries.

Swearingin, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken by Warsaw Ambulance District to Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach with moderate injuries.

Reports indicate Hercules was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
