Two Sedalians killed in Jackson crash

Two Sedalia residents were killed in a single-vehicle accident at midnight Saturday in Jackson County.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Aven H. Cozad, 94, was driving west on U.S. Highway 50 at Easley Road when his vehicle traveled off the right side of the road, traveled down an embankment and overturned, coming to rest on its top.

Cozad and a passenger in his vehicle, Bernadine N. Cozad, 84, were both pronounced dead at Lee’s Summit Medical Center by Dr. Watts at 3:09 a.m.

Reports indicate Bernadine was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, but Aven was not.

Two injured in Johnson crash

Two people were injured in a two-vehicle accident at 8:15 p.m. Saturday in Johnson County.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Julie A. Harshman, 49, of Holden, was driving east on U.S. Highway 50, west of County Road NW 475, when she slowed to make a left-hand turn and was struck in the rear by a vehicle driven by Seth A. Ferguson, 22, of Overland Park, Kansas.

Ferguson was taken by Johnson County Ambulance District to Lee’s Summit Medical Center with moderate injuries. Harshman was also taken by PCAD to LSMC with minor injuries.

Reports indicate both Ferguson and Harshman were wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Three injured in Warrensburg

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Johnson County.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Christal Y. Brown, 31, of Warrensburg, was driving east on U.S. Highway 50 as another eastbound vehicle driven by Albert J. Oetman, 69, of Cole Camp, was entering U.S. 50 from East Business 50.

Brown attempted to avoid a collision by steering left and lost control of her vehicle. Her vehicle then struck the rear of Oetman’s vehicle.

Brown was taken by private vehicle to Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg with minor injuries.

A passenger in Oetman’s vehicle, Cami C. Oetman, age unknown, of Cole Camp, was taken by Johnson County Ambulance District to Lee’s Summit Medical Center with moderate injuries. Another passenger, Lauretta G. Oetman, 63, also of Cole Camp, was taken by JCAD to Bothwell Regional Health Center with minor injuries.

Reports indicate all involved parties were wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Jefferson City man killed in crash

A Jefferson City man was killed in a two-vehicle accident at 4:15 p.m. Friday in Moniteau County.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Rodriguez C. Long, 33, was driving east on Lookout Trail, 694 feet west of Whippoorwill Road, when his vehicle crossed the center of the road and struck a westbound vehicle driven by Alexander P. Terrell, 20, of Latham, head-on.

Long’s vehicle came to rest off the right side of the road. Terrell’s vehicle traveled across the center line, returned to the westbound lanes and came to rest off the right side of the road.

Long was pronounced dead at the scene by Moniteau County Coroner Lloyd Fulks at 4:41 p.m.

A passenger in Terrell’s vehicle, Joshua L. Long, 32, of California, Missouri, was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City with moderate injuries.

Reports indicate Terrell and Joshua were wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, but Rodriguez was not.
