Fall can be a beautiful time of the year with the changing colors, but those beautiful leaves can also pose a problem when area residents have to deal with all of those reminders of the season as the leaves fall.
Thanks to the 50 members of Smith-Cotton High School’s robotics group Team SCREAM, that problem can be easily be raked away with a fundraising project slated for Saturday.
“We decided we wanted to do something to raise the funds the members of Team SCREAM need for their hotel rooms whenever we go to a competition,” said Michael Wright, team coach and technology instructor at Smith-Cotton. “But, we wanted to do something where we would be able to go out into the community and help people and work for the money rather than just ask for donations.”
The members will rake and bag residents’ leaves for a donation to the team.
“We set a baseline price of $20 per yard,” Wright said. “If individuals would like to donate more toward our goal we would gladly accept any additional donations.”
Wright added that the members would also remove the bagged leaves for the customers if they would like that service as well.
The group is scheduled to compete at three events during the upcoming season: The Greater Kansas City Regional, March 9-12; The Oklahoma Regional in Oklahoma City, March 23-26; and the Hub City Regional in Lubbock, Texas, March 31-April 3.
There is the possibility of a fourth competition if the team qualifies for the World Championships in St. Louis, April 27-30.
“We have some very generous sponsors who, along with the school district, pay for our registration fees at the competitions,” Wright said. “It costs the students about $400 each for the rooms when we travel and they have the cost of their meals.
“We saw this as a way to help the families with the cost of the accommodations,” Wright added. “The students will still be responsible for their personal expenses but we thought this would be a good way for us to help others while we help the community for all the support they have shown the team in the past.”
Wright said the event has been posted on Team SCREAM’s website and has received a good response so far.
“We have already had a bunch of appointments and would like for more people to call and schedule theirs,” Wright said. “With 50 of us out there raking we should be able to get several yards done.
“Depending on the locations, and the number of appointments we have, we may go door to door in some neighborhoods, especially ones with a lot of big trees and see if we can’t help some more people out,” Wright said with a laugh.
Wright added that the group will be out Saturday no matter what the forecast may be.
Individuals who would like to schedule an appointment may do so by contacting Wright at [email protected] or by calling Smith-Cotton High School at 851-5300.
