Holiday time will be a little more festive with the music of State Fair Community College Music Department’s annual Christmas Concert slated for today and Saturday.
Approximately 60 music students will participate in the event that will feature performances by the SFCC Chamber Choir, Jazz Choir and the Jazz Runners Jazz Band.
“Everybody who is a music major or non-music major, but involved in the performance aspect of the music program will be involved in this,” said Ronald J. Sayer, SFCC Music Arts coordinator and director of choirs. “It’s going to be a good evening, as far as seeing student talent.
“The majority of the Christmas things we’ve done before,” he added. “What we are trying to do, is do as much music as we can that evening, it will put people in the (holiday) mood.”
He said there is an extensive amount of music featured with the concert.
“There are familiar things that people are just going to know when they hear it, and then some things they probably have never heard before,” he said.
The Chamber Choir will perform a piece with the English title “Of the Father’s Love Begotten.” The piece actually has a Latin title and is centuries old.
“It started out as a Gregorian chant,” Sayer noted. “So, that particular piece is over 1,000-years-old. It’s really cool. I was telling the students the text of this is basically a prayer, but it’s been recited yearly in churches and monasteries world-over for over a thousand years. So, we are connecting with that.”
The text of the piece was written by a Roman citizen and Christian, Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, in the early fourth century.
“The prayer was then set to chant, which was the music of the church at the time,” Sayer added.
They will also perform an English Christmas carol titled “Torches.”
“Some people have heard it before, I’m sure, but not everyone,” he added. “Then we are doing some things that are being done a different way. The Jazz Choir and the Jazz Band, they are taking some traditional holiday music and giving it a new tempo and a new feel.”
The concert will present both secular and sacred music.
“There’s going to be music that children will know and there’s going to be some music that the adults will know,” Sayer said. “It’s just a feel-good time. That’s what we want, for the audience to walk away feeling good at the end of this.”
The SFCC Christmas Concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday in the Stauffacher Theatre on campus. Sayer said it’s best to arrive at the theatre 30 minutes before the performance.
