The art of construction

State Fair Community College Vo-Tech Building Trades students Jacob Blankenship, left, a junior at Cole Camp High School, and Austin Shelledy, a senior at Whittier High School, hang insulation in a home the class is building on East 14th Street near Engineer Avenue Tuesday afternoon. SFCC Building Trades Instructor Steve Gann said there are a total of 25 students from surrounding communities taking the class this year. “This is my 21st year and this is one of the best groups I’ve had,” Gann said. “They’re just amazing.”

Colton Knox, left, a junior at Cole Camp High School, hands extra insulation to Austin Shelledy as Jacob Blankenship installs it in the ceiling of the 1,300-square-foot home the students are building this year. The SFCC Building Trades class, comprised of high school juniors and seniors, began the project in late October and will finish the house and have it ready to place on the market by May 20.

SFCC Building Trades students Devin Thoennes, left, a junior from Lincoln High School, and Skylar Blake, a senior from Warsaw High School, talk Tuesday with instructor Steve Gann about the breaker box the class installed outside the home Monday. While taking the class, Gann said the students learn the electrical trade, roofing, how to lay ceramic tile, window and door installation and how to hang Sheetrock. “They get a pretty good base on what construction is about,” he added.
