A fire weather warning is in effect from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday in Pettis County.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, there will be dry and windy conditions this afternoon.
Late this morning winds are expected to increase out south as relative humidity plummets. Critical fire weather threshold will be reached this afternoon over eastern Kansas, western Missouri and portions of central Missouri. Dry fuels combined with extreme fire weather conditions will allow for any fires that develop to burn quickly out of control. Citizens are encouraged to not engage in outdoor burning today.
Affected areas include Bates, Buchanan, Caldwell, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Henry, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis, Platte and Ray counties.
NWS reports there will be sustained south winds at 15 to 20 mph with winds gusting 25 to 30 mph. Minimum relative humidity values will range between 20 and 30 percent.
