By the time my concerns are (“hopefully”) in print, the results of our city-wide survey should be studied/reviewed with full commentary in this newspaper. What are my concerns?
No. 1 The small percentage of returned surveys (approximately 9,000 mailed — 9 percent returned). Is this to be considered a fair consensus to the public. I think not.
No. 2 Please — let me break it down (major items) as I see it. City Services — trash pick-up — excellent/Fire Department — excellent/Police — excellent/Parks and Recreation — excellent. The only problem at this time is the miss-use by property owners (yes — mostly rentals) of the current city policy allowing “on demand twice a year material pick-up.” This is under review by your City Council and will be addressed in the near future.
Now for the reason I submit this letter to the news-paper. Rental Inspections — survey shows 69 percent of the 9 percent who took the time to fill out the survey support inspections. If my math is correct that amounts to a whopping (9,000 + 9 percent = 810 now 81 + 69 percent = 560). Out of this number, I wonder how many are rental owners. The City Council has been approached twice now by a particular rental owner (who tells me that she owns one rental and that I do not want to [anger] my friends) but knows many more who need their property inspected. If she only knew the amount of calls I have had, telling me that this is a business and should not be regulated by City Ordinance. Yes. Sedalia has several rentals that need repair (that comes under our Code Enforcement regulations). We currently have enough ordinances on the books. Let’s let them do their job/stay out of the private sector.
