Sacred Heart statebound for speech


In addition to two District Champion titles and two berths to state, Sacred Heart’s Speech team advanced to finals in five of the eight events they competed in at the district speech meet on Saturday. SHS students who will be competing are from left Summer Caton, Rachel Ulbrich, Emma Rollings, Abby Smeltzer and Sadie Rollings.

The Sacred Heart Speech team took home two individual district champion titles and two berths to state at the district speech competition. Sadie Rollings is a state qualifier as District Champion in Prose and as third place finisher in Radio. Emma Rollings is a state qualifier as District Champion in U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking and as a second place finisher (missing 1st place on a tiebreaker) in Original Oratory. Summer Caton took sixth place in Humorous Interpretation. “Overall the team had phenomenal finish,” says Jan Bahner, speech coach. “Our team competed in eight events and advanced to finals in five of them.”

Sacred Heart will compete at the 2017 MSHSAA State Speech/Debate/Theatre Championships at Missouri State University in Springfield on April 22.
