The rain just barley held off, but the seventh annual Lub Dub 5K/10K Walk/Run was a success, raising more than $20,000.

Bothwell Foundation Director Lisa Church said more than 430 participants took part in the race Saturday, which raises money Bothwell Regional Health Center’s Camye Callis Gaspard Memorial Heart Fund. This year’s funds will be used to purchase a NuStep for the hospital’s Cardiac Rehab program.

“We’re still figuring up the total raised, we don’t have all of our expenses in yet, but I would estimate our gross proceeds were between $22,000 and $23,000 this year, which is fantastic,” Church said. “We’ll be able to use a portion of that to purchase the NuStep and the rest will go back to the Heart Fund to be invested. Down the road we may need to use that money to make a major equipment purchase, so having those extra funds will go a long way toward helping that.”

A highlight from this year’s event was a flash mob, led by Kim Ream, that took place during the awards ceremony. Many of the participants were members of Healthy U and the Couch to 5K Program, Church said.

“The Couch to 5K program was really successful this year, somewhere in the neighborhood of 260 to 280 participants,” she said. “A lot of times people think they do need to be more physically active but they don’t really know how to go about starting that. With Couch to 5K, it gives you a plan to follow and some motivation. I think it’s how a lot of runners get hooked (on running), actually, which is a great thing.”

“We had a wonderful turn out this year, including 150 volunteers,” she added. “All in all it was a great event, people had a good time, which is really our goal. We want folks to come out to support a good cause while participating in a physical activity. It was a fun day.”
