Nicole Cooke | Democrat From left, Brooke Jackson, Amy Jackson and Briara Jackson count out the number of spiral notebooks they need for their bags while volunteering with CACTUS on Wednesday. Brooke was volunteering to get service hours for National Junior Honor Society and Amy was volunteering as part of the Sedalia Rotary Club. CACTUS Coordinator Mary Jo Sartin said she wasn’t sure yet how many backpacks full of school supplies the organization would end up donating to students in Pettis County, but last year they distributed 1,727 backpacks.
Nicole Cooke | Democrat Emily Greble, volunteering with Christ and Trinity Lutheran Church, drops off another box of spiral notebooks on the long table packed with school supplies on Wednesday. Several teens with Christ and Trinity were volunteering to help pack school supplies for CACTUS.
Nicole Cooke | Democrat Garrett McCown, left, and Brenton Dixon, volunteering with Christ and Trinity Lutheran Church, select a pencil box for the bag of school supplies they are packing for a student in Pettis County. The pair said volunteering was “fun and a little tiring.” “And it’s nice knowing it helps other people who need it,” McCown said. They said they had a goal of packing 100 backpacks, and after about two hours they had made it to 90, determined to complete their goal.
Nicole Cooke | Democrat Martha Everitt, left, empties the last box of backpacks as Karen Compton, with Altrusa, cuts the tags off each backpack while volunteering for CACTUS on Wednesday. Volunteers spent about four hours packing supplies, and backpacks will be distributed to area schools later this week.
