A gas line break at 3:21 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Southwest Boulevard and Highland Street caused the precautionary evacuation of several homes and children from an in-home daycare.

According to Sedalia Fire Department Deputy Chief Gregory Harrell, an Empire Gas main line was punctured by a backhoe while repairs were being made to a sewer line. First responders evacuated approximately 20 people and seven children at a neighborhood daycare from the area as a precautionary measure.

The “hissing” of the high-pressure gas erupting from the four-inch diameter main could be heard as far as two blocks away and due to still winds, the smell of gas was present several blocks away.

Maintenance personnel capped the line at 4:17 p.m. Empire personnel and firefighters performed a walk-through of homes surrounding the immediate area with gas sensing equipment prior to residents’ return.
