Three Smith-Cotton players scored in double figures, but their performances weren’t enough to beat the Marquette Mustangs in the championship game of the Eldon Invitational boys basketball tournament.

In a close ballgame throughout, Marquette beat the Tigers 59-50 Saturday night in Eldon.

Chance Johnson paced the Tigers with 17 points, Dante Scroggins had 12 and Dalton Zaremba 10.

Marquette led 17-15 after one quarter, 26-19 after two and 41-35 after three.

The Tigers reached the title game because Battle forfeited their semifinal and the third-place game.

S-C (5-9) will host St. Pius X in a West Central Conference matchup Tuesday night. The varsity game will tip off around 7 p.m.

Randall Sherman broke Warsaw’s school record for career points, and the Wildcats beat Ava 80-70 in the third-place game of the Conway boys basketball tournament.

Sherman scored a game-high 35 points, breaking the old career record of 1,351. He now has 1,370.

Joey Cooner and Jesse Chamberlain joined Sherman in double figures with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

The Wildcats (12-7) led 26-13 after one quarter, 39-31 at halftime and 59-48 after three quarters.
