The 509th Security Forces Squadron, Sedalia’s liaison unit stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base, is looking for donations of Easter candy for its annual Easter Egg Hunt next weekend.

Mayor Elaine Horn said so far they’ve “got a good start on it but we are certainly open to having more. We want to make sure the kids have a good Easter egg hunt.”

Horn said they’ve received several different types of candy, but surprisingly none of the Easter candy staple — jelly beans.

“No jelly beans yet,” Horn said. “When I think of Easter I think of hard-boiled eggs and jelly beans and Peeps. We’ve had very little of that, which is bizarre to me. Jelly beans are my favorite part. But any candy they want to give would be awesome. (Whiteman) is appreciative of anything and everything we do for them.”

Citizens of Sedalia have continued to be generous to the families at Whiteman and Horn spoke about the importance of the relationship between the city and the base.

“It’s important to help out because besides the squadron being our sister squadron, these are men and women that are part of less than 1 percent in the country that volunteer for military service,” Horn said. “It’s a good opportunity to give them family time, they don’t get lot of that.

“They get together as squad with their families and as a unit family to spend time together. It’s not work related, it’s not mandatory, it’s a time to sit back and have fun and be grateful for the friendships they’ve made here. They appreciate our support, the support Sedalia gives is second to none and they’re appreciative of that.”

Horn said Sedalia residents can make a monetary donation if they aren’t able to buy candy, which can be dropped off at her office. She added that residents can call her office at 827-3000 ext. 145 to make arrangements for their donations to be picked up if needed.

Candy should dropped off by Tuesday at either the Mayor’s office, 200 S. Osage Ave., or Thompson Hills Investment Corp, 906 Thompson Blvd. The Easter Egg Hunt, which is for squadron families only, will take place Saturday, April 5.
