Two piles of earth sit behind the third base dugout at Otterville’s baseball field, waiting to be installed on the field later this week. The field, tasked with hosting both baseball and softball games, is a work in progress.

That is the same phrase Otterville baseball coach Jay Allen used to describe the Eagles this season, after dropping their home opener Monday 14-1 to Cole Camp.

“It’s a shame that Cole Camp didn’t get to play on it,” Allen said. “But it didn’t look like it hurt them too much.”

The Otterville softball team suffered a similar fate as MacKenze Gudde shutout the Eagles 15-0 in the minimum three innings.

“(Gudde) was a good, strong pitcher,” said Otterville softball head coach Gina Gaskell after the game. “She could waste pitches if she needed to, because she knew we would swing.”

The Lady Bluebirds four runs in the first inning and four runs in the second. A pair of error-related inside-the-park homeruns lifted Cole Camp to a mercy-rule 15-0 lead in the third.

In the second inning, Otterville managed runners on first and second with two outs. Gudde worked out of the situation with a strikeout.

Cole Camp baseball also benefited from a quality pitching performance. Brady Theisen cruised through the Otterville lineup through five innings.

Theisen, an All-District selection last season, had a different approach in the offseason. His workouts included less throwing, and more focus on pitch sequence.

“I worked a lot mentally,” Theisen said. “There’s a lot of work to be done studying up on what you’re going to do, what kind of pitches you’re going to follow … if I’m changing eye-levels and that stuff.”

He said applying those lessons worked “pretty well” Monday.

“A couple times I missed my spot,” Theisen said. “But sometimes (when) you miss your spot, you just got to go in there and make a better pitch.”

Cole Camp baseball hosts California today at 5 p.m. The Otterville baseball and softball teams face Windsor on the road today at 5 p.m.
