Davion Sparks lands in the sand pit after a long jump attempt Tuesday at the SC Quad at Smith-Cotton. Sparks, a freshman, said he felt “wonderful” at his first high school track and field meet. His mark in the long jump was 16-9 1/2.


Marshall’s Elizabeth Pomerenke leads the pack in the 1600-meter run Tuesday at the SC Quad. She finished more than a minute faster than the runner-up with a time of 6 minutes 12.1 seconds.

Track and field, indoor and out, took over the beginning of the week for some area student-athletes.

Central Missouri hosted the high school Mule Relays yesterday and Monday. Smith-Cotton, Marshall, Smithton, Windsor and Hermitage competed at the S-C Quad Tuesday in Sedalia.

Freshman Davion Sparks – competing in his first high school track meet – ran in the 100 meter dash, the 200 and long jump.

He said was pleased with his first meet at Smith-Cotton.

“I feel wonderful,” Sparks said. “This is my first high school meet, and I feel good to do it.”

Sparks finished eighth with a time of 12.56 seconds in the 100, 17th in the 200 and fifth in the long jump with a mark of 16-9 1/2 feet.

Cole Camp sent several athletes to the Mule Relays. Freshman Lainey Williams placed first in the 800m race with a time of 2 minutes 35.272 seconds. The Lady Bluebirds’ 4×400 meter team of Williams, Tayler Gudde, Taylor Dolt and Claire Holles finished second with a time of 4:29.32.
