Taylor Beebe celebrated her birthday on the soccer pitch by scoring a bunch of goals.
She notched two goals in the junior varsity match against Warrensburg in a 10-0 victory, and recorded a hat trick in about 10 minutes as a sub in the varsity match. Beebe’s spark plug performance lifted Smith-Cotton to an 8-0 victory Tuesday in Sedalia.
The birthday girl had little explanation for her performance.
“The opportunities were there,” Bebee said. “Sometimes I don’t really know how it happens, but, it went in.”
Her first goal caught the Warrensburg back line back-tracking with possession in the box. Beebe chipped in a goal when no Warrensburg failed to clear the ball.
Beebe kept her stride with three Warrensburg defenders at her heels for her next score. Her third goal – Smith-Cotton’s eighth – was the result of a clean cross in the 83rd minute.
Smith-Cotton head coach Adam Murray said Beebe brings offensive life off the bench.
“She got in front of the goal and just finished,” Murray said. “She had composure and put the ball in the back of the net. She’s kind of a spark because she plays hard.”
A misplayed Warrensburg touch in the box opened a shooting lane for Brianna Pollitt, who converted the error into the first goal of the game.
A Warrensburg handball about 30 feet from the goal put Maddie Davidson in position to score with 17:41 in the first half. She rifled in the second Smith-Cotton goal.
Marilyn Ream deflected a cross from the right side into the net with 10:11 to play in the first half. Smith-Cotton (7-1) led the visiting Lady Tigers 3-0 at half.
Smith-Cotton scored in an assortment of ways. Murray said variety is a point of emphasis in the Lady Tiger’s attack, and that the team tested other formations with a comfortable, second-half lead.
Bebee said she may have benefited from the formation.
(Murray) told us to act like we’re down, like we need a goal,” Bebee said. “So we just practice intense situations when we need a score.”
The visiting Lady Tigers had trouble getting numbers on the attack, and there was no shortage of Smith-Cotton goals with Warrensburg on their heels.
Ream notched the fourth Smith-Cotton goal a minute into the second period.
Jessica Coble finished near the goal on a short breakaway in the box to make the score 5-0 in the 67th minute.
Ream and Reagan Hockett earned one assist while Davidson registered two.
