Cole Camp was the low seed and also the host team in Saturday’s 10-0 loss to Northwest in the opening round of the Kaysinger Baseball Tournament. All 10 of the Mustangs’ runs were placed under “Bluebirds” on the scoreboard, while the Bluebirds were “Visitors” in their own home.

Connor Tichenor tied up Cole Camp batters for six innings and the Mustangs set the tone offensively in their first two at-bats.

Garren Powell opened the game with a triple and Dallas Hammonds followed with a walk. Chandler Crosswhite and Tichenor followed with singles, and Northwest led 2-0.

Cole Camp starter Brady Theisen lasted five innings and faced four batters in the final sixth inning, leaving the game down 8-0.

Powell said the offensive game plan was to hit Theisen’s offerings to the opposite field.

“I saw that he was wanting to pitch some outside,” Powell said. “So we had preached on that before the game that we were going to work on staying back on the ball and try to drive it (opposite).”

The Mustangs continued their barrage of low-angle line drives against Kendrick Logan in relief.

Northwest totaled 17 hits in six innings.

Rylan Chamberlin’s single to score Baron Austin gave Northwest a 10-0 lead and concluded the game. It was the first time Cole Camp had been spread this season.

Head coach Todd Rusk said he was disappointed in the opening-round performance.

“I thought we could have had a little better effort in,” Rusk said. “But they hit the ball. It’s hard to play defense on 17 hits … We were a five-seed against a four-seed and we had an opportunity.”

Tichenor worked through two bases-loaded situations in the fourth and sixth innings with an assault of curveballs.

He said his pitch selection was “half-and-half” fastball and curveball against Cole Camp.

“This team, they were a good fastball hitting team,” Tichenor said. “So we came out and threw curveballs.”

Northwest faces Lincoln today at 4 p.m. in Cole Camp.
