The Mustangs are district champs for a fourth straight year.
In their second season assigned to Class 1 District 14, Northwest baseball captured the tournament championship Thursday with a 5-4 victory over Santa Fe.
Alex Breshears knocked a 2-run single in the third to give Northwest their first lead. Tanner Killion scored the first Mustangs run on a wild pitch.
Head coach Justin Wiskur said those early runs helped numb any tournament-triggered jitters.
“Tanner scoring that run kind of calmed us down a little bit,” Wiskur said. “To tie it up there, and when Breshears came up, he made it 3-2. At that point our boys loosened up a lot.”
Rylan Chamberlin pitched 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed seven hits, three runs and struck out three.
Chandler Crosswhite relieved Chamberlin through the sixth and recorded one out in the seventh before Connor Tichenor closed the game’s final two outs.
Santa Fe scored four runs with 13 base runners. Wiskur said he was pleased with his pitching staff’s performance – especially freshman pitcher Chamberlin– with runners on base.
“Santa Fe had our backs against the wall virtually the entire game,” Wiskur said. “For a freshman to go up in a district championship game and hold it together, especially with the pressure on him, (Chamberlin) did a great job.”
Northwest, after maneuvering around weather cancellations to Marshall and Odessa for the district 14 tournament, will host a state tournament game Monday against Drexel or Ballard.
Lincoln 6, Sacred Heart 0
Connor Spunaugle tossed a shutout to lead Lincoln to a state tournament.
The Cardinals manufactured a run in the first with a sacrifice bunt and a single, and it was all Spunaugle needed.
“His fastball had a lot of tail to it today,” Lincoln head coach Will Lynde said. “He got a little wild in the middle innings, but I’ll say he was effectively wild. Early, his changeup worked pretty good, then he pitched to contact. We played great defense today. Mason Sanders played great at third base.”
Lincoln will host the district 13 champions, Liberal at 5 p.m. on Monday. Lynde said the opponents are unfamiliar.
“I know they beat a real good team to win the championship,” Lynde said of Liberal’s victory over Marion C. Early High School. “It will be a real good game.”
