Local racers competed in the ASCS Warrior Sprint Cars and non-winged WAR Sprint Car series Friday at the Sedalia State Fair Speedway.

Jonathan Cornell, a Sedalia native and current points leader in the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series, finished 13th at the last race in Sedalia, after an accident with a lap car spoiled his lead.

Cornell earned the top poll position and began first in the second feature.

“That was one of the races I felt we should have had in the bag,” Cornell said. “Hopefully, I don’t know, our bad luck from last time is changing around this time.”

Another local racer, 16-year-old Broc Elliott, was strapped in his car prepared to race the second feature before a wreck on the first straightaway delayed the Non-Winged Sprint Car feature. His great uncle, Dean Elliott, raced his final lap at the Sedalia race track after a crash on turn one engulfed his car in flames.

“Just trying to keep the Elliott racing tradition going,” Broc said.

Broc’s cousin, Tyler Elliott, is crew chief for Brad Loyet.

Tyler said he appreicates the legend offered at the Sedalia Half-Mile.

“Historic,” Tyler said. “When I think about Sedalia, I think of the historic half-mile. That’s what I look foward to racing, is the background and prestigous stuff that goes on in the background”

Loyet, with a recent victory at Lakeside Speedway, said he also enjoys the Sedalia track. The stakes were higher, he said, when racing on a speedier, softer track than last month’s dry, dusty conditions.

“You have to have a different mindset at a race track this big, this fast,” Loyet said. “I think that scares some people away … Just the fact that there’s always a chance you could die. This isn’t soccer, you know? We’re out here going over 120 mph with a little bit of tubing around and seatbelts. This is not your average sport.”

UPDATE: May 21, 1:51 a.m.

Jonathan Cornell led start to finish in the 25-lap ASCS Warrior Region feature event. It is his first victory of the 2016 season.

Derek Hagar in the 9JR car and Brad Loyet in the o5 car chased Cornell to the finish.

Randy Martin, Kyle Bellm, Austin Alumbaugh, Corey Nelson, Evan Martin, Mitchell Moore and Danny Thoman rounded out the top-ten. Alambuagh advanced six positions to finish sixth.

Korey Weyant of Springfield, Illinois took the checkered flag in the Non-Winged sprints after starting in third place. Clinton Boyles, current points leader in the WAR circuit finished fourth behind runner-up Shane Cockrun and Derek Hagar.

Chris Desselle’s car was turned end-over-end midway though the contest. He walked away from the accident but was escorted via helicopter from the scene.

Riley Kreisel, who earned top poll position in heat one, finished fifth.
