Sedalia Junior Legion baseball club managed just one hit, but capitalized in a big way on a Glendale error at the Missouri AA State Tournament in Washington, Missouri on Thursday.

Braiden McEachern and Alec Luyet scored on a throwing error at second base that resulted in a dead ball in the second inning. Brant Gideon earned the RBIs in a 2-0 victory over the Glendale Merchants.

Head coach Brent Hodge, who emphasized capitalizing on mistakes before the tournament, said the winning play reinforced that lesson.

“It was a baseball play we executed exactly right and they just made a mistake,” Hodge said. “That kind of put an explanation mark on it.”

Connor Tichenor pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out six. He allowed four hits and five walks. Luyet recorded the final two outs and earned the save.

Hodge said Tichenor trusted his defense.

“(Tichenor has) got a lot of confidence in the guys behind him,” Hodge said. “As a pitcher that takes a lot of the weight of your shoulders.”

Sedalia Rick Ball continues play in the state tournament semifinals Friday at 5:30 p.m. They are scheduled to face the Cape Girardeau Post 63, who defeated Washington Post 218, 8-2, Thursday.

Cape Girardeau silenced Elsberry Post 226, 8-0, in the opening round of the tournament.
