Green Ridge girls golf, boys soccer and girls volleyball kicked off the first week of practice with a night inside.
The teams, its coaches, parents and administrators hosted a tailgate 10 p.m. through midnight and began practicing its respective sports one minute into the day.
Girls golf, coached by Molly Needy practiced first, Lori Larimore’s volleyball team practiced inside the Green Ridge school gym and, while cut short by early-morning rain, the boys soccer team, coached by Stephan Basham, checked day one off practice off the to-do list.
The group of about 50-plus athletes capped off the workout and all-nighter with a breakfast at 6 a.m.
Despite the hour, Larimore said the student-athletes were more excited than tired after the lock-in.
“I think, just everybody’s adrenaline had been running on high and everybody had a good time,” Larimore said. “We got together and we watched a movie, some actually slept for a little while … I think the kids had a good time. It was a good way for all of them to get together after summer and have fun and kind of support each other.
“Our whole idea behind it was for the athletes to support each other and the other programs once our season starts its hard to do that, to support each other.”
Green Ridge girls volleyball begins its season 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at Sweet Springs. The Tigers boys soccer opened at home against Father Tolton, Tuesday, Aug. 23, with first kick beginning at 4:30 p.m. Girls golf begins with a match at Sacred Heart, Aug. 22.
