For Smith-Cotton girl’s golf head coach Chris Guffey, the Smith-Cotton Classic began sometime last week, researching scores for various high school girl’s golf teams.

That homework helped him decide threesomes for teams competing in the 17-team Classic, which paced like a well-oiled machine Monday, Sept. 12 at the Sedalia Country Club.

Hickman shot a team-score of 320 to win the event and Rock Bridge was runner-up with a score of 329. Sacred Heart fired a season-best 393 to claim fifth place, while Smith-Cotton finished seventh.

Camdenton golfer Amber Wilson was tournament medalist with a two-under par 68. Rock Bridge’s Julia Bower was runner-up at 73. Annie Guier led Smith-Cotton with an 83, good for seventh place.

Guffey said despite the large field and recent precipitation, threesomes averaged about seven minutes per hole — a tick longer Missouri State High School Activities Association’s recommendation — but finished within 15 minutes of each other.

“It was a cooperative effort,” Guffey said about the Classic’s timeliness.

Golfers enjoyed a Country Kitchen and Pepsi-donated lunch and drinks at the turn of the round, and completed the Classic in about six hours.

A wide array of teams visited the Sedalia Country Club for the Classic. While Columbia schools Hickman and Rock Bridge led the field, Smith-Cotton saw conference rival, Warrensburg and Kaysinger schools Cole Camp, Sacred Heart and Green Ridge had eight combined golfers compete.

Lady Bluebird sophomore Alexis Tucker, who fired a 139, said she was not shooting well, but was happy to improve her game at the Sedalia Country Club golf course.

“It’s pretty neat,” Tucker said. “The holes are nice, the grass is cut and it’s a nice day.”
