Missouri Valley could not hold on to a 15-point lead, losing to William Penn 35-28 on Saturday in the season opener in Marshall.

The Vikings built a 28-13 lead early in the third quarter. Travis Middleton threw a pair of touchdown passes to Dorian Stanard and Darrian Turk and Joseph Muriel scored on a 6-yard run and a 10-yard pass to Jakari Johnson.

William Penn answered late in the third quarter, then kept it up in the fourth, tying the game on a safety with 5:47 left and winning it when Tyler Hafner scored from a yard out on a quarterback keeper with 36 seconds left.

Middleton was 12-14 for 160 yards passing. Muriel was 11-24 for 125.

Peru State 48, Central Methodist 17

Peru State scored 31 unanswered second-half points to beat Central Methodist 48-17 on Saturday.

The Bobcats scored 24 points in the third quarter alone to break a 17-17 halftime tie while the CMU offense stalled in the quarter. Four Eagle drives in the third resulted in three punts and an interception as CMU was limited to eight yards of offense.

Caleb Bradford was 18-41 passing for 236 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
