A pair of home runs highlighted the offensive barrage as Warrensburg beat Smith-Cotton 14-6 on Thursday in a West Central Conference softball game at Vansell Field.

Warrensburg erased a 1-0 S-C lead by scoring three in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the seventh.

“We lose focus and people get down,” said S-C coach Janeil Draffen. “Sometimes our girls get down and when they have a couple runs score, some of us tend to keep our heads down. We’ve just got to work on becoming more mentally tough and overcoming those errors and being better defensively when the other team starts putting the ball in play.”

S-C took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Reagan Hockett led off with a single and Maddy Kindle drove her in with a single up the middle.

Hockett went 2 for 3 with a single and a double and reached on an error and a fielder’s choice. She scored three runs.

“We haven’t had the same lineup game-after-game, I’ve been trying to switch it up, but Reagan has been the top of the lineup since day one,” Draffen said. “No matter where she is, she’s going to put the ball in play and get her at bats in and get her swings in. She’s done a great job for us offensively and defensively.”

With her glove, Hockett had a hand in nine putouts, catching two pop ups and a line drive and collecting six 6-3 grounders.

S-C also got solid defense in left field from McKenna Woolery who charged in to snag a ball in the first inning, saved a run by throwing a runner out at the plate in the second, then had another outfield assist in the fourth, throwing a runner out at third.

“She’s really been tracking down balls,” Draffen said. “We moved her from center this year to left and she’s been really tracking the balls down. She’s not the quickest but she knows how to judge the ball off the bat.”

After Warrensburg took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second, S-C got a run in the bottom of the second as Hockett drove in Darby Christian.

Warrensburg made it 4-2 in the third with a solo home run from Elizabeth Nimmer but Smith-Cotton again scored in its half of the inning when an Emma Honn sacrifice fly brought in Mariah Voitl.

Warrensburg then broke the game open in the fourth. Maci Cuncanan hit an inside-the-park three-run homer to make it 7-3.

Smith-Cotton got a run in the bottom of the fifth when Hockett scored on a wild pitch and two in the seventh when Hockett scored on an error and pinch runner Akeeya Powell scored on a ground out.

S-C will host Eldon on Monday.
