A strong start to the first game and a strong finish to the second helped Smith-Cotton’s volleyball team beat Nevada 25-16, 25-14 on Thursday.

S-C recorded the first six points of the first game, three on Courtney Koetting aces, and led 9-1 at one point. In the second game, Nevada led 13-11 before S-C rallied to take 14 of the next 15 points and close the match.

“I saw some really good serves,” said Smith-Cotton coach Darcia Koetting. “We had some aces right off the bat. I thought our offense was running really smoothly. We had great passes up from our passers. We kind of had a low point in the middle but came back up and I was really proud of them that first game. The second game, I think we didn’t come out as strong as we should have and made a good comeback at the end.”

Down 13-11 in the second game, Smith-Cotton soon tied it with a block from Tori Jacobi and Montana Hedrick. Aces from Courtney Koetting and a kill from Hedrick were part of a Smith-Cotton run to make it 19-13.

“We had a couple of servers, Courtney and Emilee (Edgar) that came up really strong at the line,” Darcia Koetting said. “Montana was really strong at the net for us and really put down some good hits, just a good, all-around team effort for everybody there at the end.”

Hedrick had a kill as S-C closed it out with the final six points of the game.

“We just made sure that everyone calmed down and just imagined they were in practice and got a good pass up,” Hedrick said. “Everyone was just working together better after we had a good talk with Darcia about it.”

Courtney Koetting finished with four aces. Hedrick had three. Edgar had two.

“We were just serving to their weak side over on the server’s side so we were taking out their setter,” Hedrick said.

Hedrick also had 10 kills, four digs and a block and on one point kept a ball in play after it had been hit toward the S-C bench.

“She’s a hustler,” Darcia Koetting said. “She got the hustle award for our team last year and definitely deserves that because she’s all over the court, everywhere, does a great job for us.”

Courtney Koetting finished with three kills, 10 assists and four digs. Jacobi had two kills, four assists and a block. Darby Simon had two kills. Fernanda Alexander had seven digs. Bailey Curry had eight digs.

S-C (11-1-1, 4-1 WCC) will host the Smith-Cotton Invitational beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
