Smith-Cotton pulled out a close first game, then cruised in the second to beat Versailles 26-24, 25-15 on Monday.
Kills from Lendie Nolting and Ali Lent helped Versailles take a 24-22 lead in the first game but Smith-Cotton rallied. Courtney Koetting came up with a kill and Bailey Curry followed with an ace. Koetting added another kill to end the set.
“I thought they did a great job coming back the last few points,” said Smith-Cotton coach Darcia Koetting. “They’re usually fighters at the end of a game and did a great job with that.”
The first set went back-and-forth with neither team able to establish much of a lead. A kill from Tori Jacobi had S-C up 5-4 before Versailles rallied. Lent came up with a kill to put Versailles ahead 8-6 before kills from Mikayla Gear and Darby Simon put Smith-Cotton back in front. The teams fought through a series of ties before Montana Hedrick and Curry had kills to help S-C take a 17-13 lead.
Versailles again rallied with Nolting and Lent getting blocks on back-to-back points to put Versailles up 20-19.
“We had some nice blocks,” said Versailles coach Brenda Campbell. “We’re kind of vulnerable on tips and we’re still trying to work on that, but a lot of times we’re kind of in between. We’re not where we need to be. We’re standing there watching and we need to be more involved.”
In the second, Smith-Cotton scored the first six points including kills from Courtney Koetting and Emilee Edgar before Bri Hendrix got Versailles on the board with a kill. Smith-Cotton led 11-7 before scoring eight of the next nine points including a pair of Courtney Koetting aces, a kill from Hedrick and a block by Christy Sparks.
“We had it more together in the first game than the second,” Campbell said. “We let one girl serve a whole bunch of points which we should have been able to receive but did not and I think that kind of deflated our ego a little bit.”
Jenna Rapp closed the game out with a kill.
“We had a lot of great serves, a lot of great offense,” Darcia Koetting said. “I thought the girls played together as a team and did a great job.”
Jacobi finished with two kills, five digs, an ace, a block and 10 assists. Courtney Koetting had two aces, six kills, four digs and five assists. Simon had two aces, two kills and two digs. Curry had one ace, one kill and three digs. Hedrick had an ace, five kills and four digs. Brittany Borke had seven digs. Sparks had a block. Mikayla Gear had a dig and three kills. Rapp had three kills.
