Stover held off a late flurry of Cole Camp shots to beat the Bluebirds 3-2 for third place in the Kaysinger Conference soccer tournament on Saturday.

Stover led 3-1 after a Noah Whittle goal midway through the second half but the Bluebirds kept fighting. Eli Smith scored in the 67th minute to cut the Bulldogs lead to one. For the next 13 minutes, the Bluebirds kept the pressure on, but Stover stood up to it.

A Cole Camp chance off a corner in the 69th minute went wide. Another chance off another corner a minute later was picked up by Stover goalkeeper Alex Haag. Colton Johannes headed a chance clear in the 78th minute. Cole Camp had one last chance off a throw-in with 17 seconds left, but Quentin Riddell turned it the other way.

“The other night they played their best soccer in the last 20 minutes and we told the kids at halftime that’s what we’d get again,” said Stover coach Roy Poynter. “We’re young. We wear down a little bit. We had a couple balls we didn’t get cleared, but overall we did well. The first 20 minutes of the game, we made all the runs and they had to survive it. They got through with one, we got through with one.”

In the fifth place game, Smithton beat La Monte 5-0.
