S-C boys open with win over Marshall

The Smith-Cotton boys basketball team opened its season Tuesday with a 67-28 win at Marshall.

Dante Scroggins led all scorers with 23 points. Zion Buckner added 17. Keoni Hale scored 12.

The Tiger defense held the Owls to under 10 points in the first, third and fourth quarters.

Smith-Cotton won the junior varsity game 38-35 behind 13 points from Jaden Kendrick.

S-C will open the Marshall Tournament Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Grain Valley.

La Monte 68, Calhoun 62

La Monte opened the season Tuesday with a 68-62 win over Calhoun.

The Vikings had a balanced attack with four players in double figures. Cole Scott scored 16 points, Alejandro Garcia scored 13, Tristan hackworth scored 12 and Cole Cave added 10.

La Monte trailed 33-28 after a back-and-forth first half before taking control in the second half.

“Starting two freshman on opening night, we really didn’t know what to expect from them or the rest of the team,” said Vikings coach Kevin Matz. “After everyone settled down and got into a good rhythm, chemistry just started flow. On any given night, we have several on this team that can start and play but what really matters is who is on the court at the end of the game to finish down the stretch. I was extremely impressed and proud of our kids for the effort they put forth (Tuesday).”

Calhoun won the junior varsity game 24-23.

La Monte will host Wentworth on Monday.

Windsor 70, Archie 44

The Windsor Greyhounds beat Archie 70-44 on Tuesday.

Josh Nichols led Windsor with 18 points. Jonathan Astabie added 16 and Trenton Johnson scored 15 points.

Windsor will visit Sherwood on Dec. 3.

Clinton 61, Knob Noster 47

Knob Noster fell to Clinton 61-47 on Tuesday to open its season and the Dustin Fox era.

Tucker Judd and Chase Hagle each scored 11 points to lead the Panthers.

Knob Noster will open the Warsaw Tournament on Dec. 1 against Eldon.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pilot Grove 63, Smithton 37

Marissa Day scored 16 points to lead Pilot Grove to a 63-37 win over Smithton on Tuesday.
