Sounds of cheers and splashing echoed down the halls of Sedalia Middle School one last time before next week’s conference swim meet. The Lady Tigers celebrated senior night Thursday at Joseph W. Arbisi Memorial Pool at SMS with a team win over Marshall and fell to Raymore-Peculiar 167-128.

While head coach Jerry Tankersley said S-C did not need to post their best times Thursday, the team cut times across the board.

“We’ve been working them hard in practice,” Tankersley said. “I didn’t care a whole lot about their times, but the girls did great.”

Valentyna Usyk won the 100-yard fly event for Smith-Cotton in 1 minute 21.1 seconds.

The Lady Tigers 200-yard medley team of Kaytlyn Muhr, Rachael Meyer, Valentyna Usyk and Mariah Turner finished second behind Marshall with a time of 2 minutes 16.88 seconds.

Muhr finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes and 30.45 seconds. She also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:17.36.

Tankersley said the team has been doing high-intensity sprint workouts in preparation for conference.

“One hundred percent effort, and little rest,” Tankersley said about the team’s recent training. “It really worked them out!”

Smith-Cotton hosts a conference meet at 4 p.m. Thursday.
