Robert Gillum scored 26 points as the Center Yellowjackets overcame an early 10-point deficit to post a 70-61 West Central Conference win over Smith-Cotton on Tuesday night in the S-C gym.

The Tigers led 31-30 at the half after point guard Zion Buckner’s 10 first-quarter points paced S-C to an early lead. But the Yellowjackets’ Franck Kamgain drained a three-pointer to give Center the lead, 33-31, on the first possession of the second half. Center pushed out to a seven-point advantage midway through the quarter, but three-point plays by senior Dante Scroggins and junior Tanner Powell kept S-C within two points at 49-47 heading into the fourth quarter.

Gillum, a 6-6 senior, turned it on in the fourth, scoring 11 points as the Yellowjackets pushed the pace and he benefitted from dump-off passes from driving guards. With 1:52 to play, Gillum threw down an alley-oop dunk to give Center a 10-point lead, 62-52. Scroggins drained a three with 47 seconds left to cut Center’s lead to 67-61, but that was all the closer the Tigers would get.

Scroggins led S-C with 22 points. Buckner added 17 and Powell had 12. Kamgain had 11 for Center.

Jasmine Lewis was more than the Lady Tigers could handle as Center’s 6-4 freshman poured in 20 points in three quarters to pace the Yellowjackets to a 52-39 win Tuesday night in the Smith-Cotton High gym.

The game was tight through the first two quarters, as the Lady Tigers’ Cheyenne Tumlinson and Kiara Williams each hit two three-pointers to keep S-C within two at the half, trailing 25-23. But Center exploded in the third quarter on driving layups by junior guard Sckiya Banister and 10 inside points from Lewis, who dominated the lane all night. Center’s ball pressure created turnovers, stifling the Lady Tigers’ offensive flow and pushing the Yellowjackets out to a 48-28 advantage after three quarters.

Darby Christian led the Lady Tigers with 10 points, and Aliyah Mitchell pitched in with eight. Banister finished with 11 points for Center.
