Smith-Cotton High School junior Michael Laster earned a 6th place medal in the Class 3 heavyweight division at the 2016 MSHSAA state wrestling tournament this past weekend in Columbia.

Laster, who began wrestling as a freshman, is the first medalist for S-C since 2005.

Head coach Charlie McFail said Laster “came a long way” as a wrestler.

McFail also said his finish is significant for the community.

“He represented Smith-Cotton and the town of Sedalia very well,” McFail said. “It is a big deal.”

Smith-Cotton won the West Central Conference for the second time in three years this season. Three other Tigers qualified for the state tournament with Laster.
