The University of Missouri men’s basketball team announced Thursday the hiring of Steve Shields as a special assistant to the head coach.

Shields has been the head men’s basketball coach at Arkansas-Little Rock for 12 years. Shields’ contact expired after a 13-18 record this past season.

Shields compiled a record of 192-178 while at UALR and coached the team to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011, the first for the team since 1990.

UALR won the Sun Belt Tournament to earn the automatic bid in 2011.
