The Sedalia Fire Department is reminding residents it is illegal to burn leaves, brush or trash within city limits.
According to a press release from Sedalia Fire Chief Greg Harrell, residents are able to obtain permits to burn small limbs, however no trash, building materials or leaves. Open burning without a permit can and will result in a citation. If no one is present the citation will be issued by the city attorney to the property owner via mail, according to the release. The release also cautioned that if a fire spreads or causes a secondary fire on another’s property, the individual can be held responsible for that damage as well.
Additionally, burn pits are allowed in the city, however, the fire must be within the device with no large limbs or trash. Someone must also be in attendance with the fire at all times.
