The Sedalia Travelers beat Oak Grove in dramatic fashion Thursday at Dey Field at Liberty Park, scoring two in the ninth to win 9-8 and advance to the district semifinals.

Oak Grove scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take an 8-7 lead, but Gavin Jones scored when the first baseman dropped a would-be groundout to third base to tie the game in the ninth.

Christian Jones then singled in Rocky Sell to give Sedalia a 9-8 lead.

Gavin Jones closed out the game on the mound, stranding an Oak Grove runner at third base.

With the win, Sedalia will play at 1 p.m. Friday against Finke in the semifinals.

Oak Grove will play at 4 p.m. against Odessa in the loser’s bracket. The winner of that game will advance to play at 7 p.m. in the loser’s bracket semifinals.

After allowing Oak Grove to score two in the first inning, the Travelers came back with five in the second inning.

Gehrig Taylor got it started with a single to drive in Sell.

Mays singled in Chase Plymell and Jake Kindle.

Gavin Jones later drove in a pair of runs with a double to left field to give Sedalia a 5-2 lead.

The lead didn’t last long as an error, a single and a fielder’s choice put three runs on the board for Oak Grove to tie it at five apiece.

Sell showed some power in the third with a solo homer to centerfield to give Sedalia a 6-5 lead.

A Jones sac fly scored Mays in the fourth to put the Travelers up 7-5.

Oak Grove cut it to 7-6 when a run scored on a balk.

Defense helped out the Travelers in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs, a grounder to Roberto Ramirez turned into a 1-2-3 double play.

Ramirez then got a strikeout to end the inning.

Oak Grove also loaded the bases up with no outs in the seventh, but the Travelers turned a 5-2-3 double play and Gabel Dull got a strikeout to end the inning.
