The Sacred Heart Gremlins scored the first nine points of the game and kept pulling away after that, beating Green Ridge 49-18 on Thursday.
Laura Wadley hit a baseline jumper on the Gremlins’ first possession of the game and after a McKenna Beeler basket, Madison McClain hit a 3-point play and followed that with a layup off an Anjanae Williams steal to make it 9-0.
“I think we did a good job of moving the ball around,” said Gremlins coach Caleb Crooker. “When we were able to transition, the girls were looking ahead and making good passes.”
The Gremlins built a 35-6 halftime lead by scoring 20 points in the second quarter, including nine from Elayna Ebers. Previously, the highest point total the Gremlins have put up in any one quarter this season was 13.
“We were just working really well as a team and we were working on what we’ve been working on in practice,” McClain said.
Green Ridge missed its first four shots from the field before Bailey Harding knocked down a jumper midway through the first. The Lady Tigers shot 8 of 31 from the field in the game.
“We’re really struggling to shoot the basketball well,” said Green Ridge coach Mason Dunnaway. “We’re working on it every day in practice and we’re just not getting our shots to fall yet.”
Sacred Heart’s defense also forced 20 turnovers in the first half.
“We all worked together and we were definitely talking a lot,” McClain said.
Sacred Heart’s shooting was hot at times. After Wadley’s jumper opened the game, Sacred Heart missed its next four shots from the field, but then went 14 of 31 the rest of the half and scored six times in eight possessions during one stretch of the first quarter.
“We’re giving teams too many good looks, and it’s showing,” Dunnaway said. “A lot of teams are knocking them down.”
Seven different Gremlins scored in the game with Ebers scoring 12 to lead the way. Beeler added 10 and McClain had nine, seven of those in the first quarter.
“We really passed the ball a lot so that every got really good, open shots,” Ebers said.
Ebers did a lot of her scoring from 3-point range, hitting three long-range shots in the second quarter alone and adding another in the fourth.
Sacred Heart (1-4, 1-1 Kaysinger) will host Warsaw on Monday.
Green Ridge (0-3, 0-1 Kaysinger) will visit Stover on Tuesday
